Backstory
The Man
Ejnar began his life in a small village deep in the forests. His youth here was typical. It was a simple life if a tad monotonous. Ejnar never took the bounties of his home for granted but he often felt a restlessness. A want for more. A yearning for a change.Change came one day when a traveler was passing through his home to get to the city. She was mysterious in her ways and perplexing; she called herself a sellsword but the young viera knew there was more to that. She also offered him the opportunity he’d always hoped for. A chance to get away from his village and experience the world beyond the sanctuary of the forests. And so he went with her, becoming her eager apprentice.Shortly after, he learned there was indeed more to his new mentor than she had originally admitted. A dangerous woman who did dangerous work. And if he were not afraid, then she would teach Ejnar how to survive in such a hazardous field. And so from her, he learned the trade of a spy. Learned of deception and manipulation and how to gather information. He learned of the dark corners and shadows of a city—places even the citizenry were ignorant of—and how to find the best secrets there. He learned how to lie and how to wear different emotions on his face like masks to hide his true one. And how to be a part of the shadows, unseen and unnoticed.Though there was one lesson—one very sacred and important lesson his mentor hammered into him above all else. “Do not trust anyone. They will betray you.”The trade they worked in was one of deception and manipulation. And with coin involved, it was always dangerous. You did not make friends when you worked in espionage—a business in which there was always someone who was screwed over.Ejnar always thought he heeded this lesson well. Until his own mentor betrayed him.Left him for dead after she had him take the fall for information stolen from a notorious crime lord. Information that she had stolen. However, to save herself, she had accused Ejnar. Thus leaving him with the deadly consequences. He was forced to flee the city he’d been staying in, barely escaping with his life. But none of his wounds ached more than his teacher’s betrayal. It was a lesson well-learned though. A lesson he took to heart after that…When she said not to trust anyone of course she had included herself in that. Theirs was a profession of deception and manipulation after all. Someone always had to get screwed over. And it was embarrassing that Ejnar found himself as that someone. But it would not happen again.Wounds licked and resolve restored, Ejnar stood and was ready to move forward. This time with a lesson learned.Initially he tried searching for her. However, he never was able to find his mentor again, the woman had hidden herself well. And Ejnar knew he was wasting time and resources trying to hunt someone down for petty revenge. Should fate have it, they would cross paths again…and he’d be ready when they did.He worked alone from that moment on, using the skills he learned to make a name for himself in the underworld as he moved from contract to contract. His most recent work having him serve under imperial employ. Being paid well to infiltrate and bring back information about the movement of the Eorzean resistance.
The Beast
Celbris is the voidsent that holds possession over Ejnar, though the viera is entirely unaware of his existence. The being is bound to his vessel by the cursed necklace he wears. If Ejnar were to be inquired about it, he would simply say it was gifted to him from an acquaintance he had aided long ago. Though this is a false memory implanted into his mind by the insidious creature within him.
In truth Ejnar had obtained the necklace accidentally while tailing a mark he’d been hired to apprehend. A man who had apparently stolen something from his employer; and Ejnar had been tasked with getting it back. If you were to question him about the details of that night, Ejnar would say it was a blur. He recalled infiltrating his mark’s home. He recalled finding the supposedly stolen item. And then blacking out. It was here he assumed he had been ambushed and knocked out by another assailant, for his next memories were waking up on the floor and feeling terribly groggy. Not only that but the artifact he was supposed to retrieve was gone—taken by his attacker…or so he assumed. This was not the only bad turn his night had taken, however, for he had also found his mark dead. Murdered in such a brutal fashion he dare not repeat the details aloud. And fearing that the culprit still lurked by—and not wanting to be blamed himself for it—he slipped away from the scene to report this mishap to his employer. Only to be greeted by the third bad turn of the night…his employer dead as well. Murdered in the same gruesome way his mark had been…Worried that he had wandered his way into brutal three-way conflict, Ejnar took his leave of the place at once. He felt the sting of not being paid for the night but it was a hurt he would take over becoming entangled in whatever had occurred that night. He never questioned the incident…neither did he question the sudden new trinket he had unknowingly acquired around his neck…Ejnar would experience more odd occurrences afterwards though. Sudden blackouts. Time lost. He of course blamed it on being too deep within his cups or overworking himself, never suspecting anything insidious going on. And never making the connection between these episodes and the string of violent attacks that occur on these nights. The nervous whispers in the taverns of a wild beast that stalks the city and slaughters all it comes across on dark moonless nights. No one has caught it. Few have seen it. And even then the only description they can give is a creature with burning crimson eyes.Ejnar was never one to scare easy…however these descriptions of the beast always leave him feeling unnerved and nauseated. Thus he always has to slip away whenever these conversations reach his ears.By day, Celbris is mostly powerless under the light of the sun. Night is when its power is strongest, though it is only on nights of a new moon when it chooses to hunt. Its ravenous appetite sated only the violence it causes. Ejnar of course recalls nothing of these hunts, waking in his bed the next morning only feeling slightless restless. Completely unaware of the monstrous being that so easily uses him to commit its atrocities.Celbris does demonstrate a certain amount of protectiveness for Ejnar, though only in the way a parasite might want to protect its host. If anything or anyone should prove to be a threat to him, the voidsent will see to it that this threat is disposed of. As for Ejnar, while not aware he is possessed, he in turn is quite protective of Celbris…or rather the cursed necklace he wears. As he believes it holds sentimental value to him he prefers others not touch it. And becomes quite defensive—and even sometimes aggressive—if someone were to try and remove it from his person.
